KING OF THE CAN WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTED BY STAR SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS OCTOBER 14TH AND 15TH AT PENN CAN SPEEDWAY

Penn Can Speedway is gearing up for the Annual King of the Can Weekend on its traditional Friday and Saturday, October 14th and 15th date with a Sunday, October 16th raindate. The weekend will feature several STAR Series Championship events and will be highlighted by the 50 lap King of the Can for Modifieds on Friday night.

Drivers in six divisions will be competing in STAR Series events over the weekend. Friday night’s show will consist of STAR Series events for the Modifieds, Crate Sportsman and Factory Stocks along with the Four Cylinders. The Sportsman will also be running for Grit Series points. Race time on Friday is 7:30 p.m. The action then swings over to Saturday highlighted by the CRSA Sprint Cars along with STAR Series events for the IMCA Style Modifieds, Street Stocks and Four Cylinders, along with the Excel 600 cc Modifieds.

Last year’s King of the Can for Modifieds saw Stewart Friesen notch the big win over Penn Can regulars Nick Rochinski and Joey Grammes in a hard fought battle. Friesen, coming off the win at the finale at Syracuse the week before, fought off continued pressure from Rochinski to score the victory. Anthony Perrego and Kevin Hartnett rounded out the top five last year.

This year’s Modified race is a STAR Series event for the first time. The STAR Series is a series of races run at Penn Can, Five Mile Point and Skyline. Danny Johnson is the current point leader and will be one of the favorites coming to Penn Can, where he is always a top runner.

The King of the Can Weekend is the second longest running special event in the region running on its traditional week after Super Dirt Week date. The inaugural King of the Can was held in 1999. Track regulars have won nearly half of the races run over the years beginning with Brian Weaver taking the 1999 win. Track regulars have won seven of the 16 races that have been held but have not won this race since Kevin Bates in 2010. Friesen joins Weaver and Jeff Rudalavage as the only two time winners of the race. Here is the complete list of winners:

2015 Stewart Friesen, 2014 Matt Sheppard, 2013 Billy Decker, 2012 Ryan Godown, 2011 Stewart Friesen, 2010 Kevin Bates, 2009 Rain, 2008 Duane Howard, 2007 Jeff Rudalavage, 2006 Joey Grammes, 2005 Brian Weaver, 2004 Doug Hoffman, 2003 Jamie Shea, 2002 Jeff Rudalavage, 2001 Keith Hoffman, 2000 Kirk Horton, 1999 Brian Weaver.

Will a Penn Can regular bring the title back home or will an invader keep the streak alive? Join us on Friday and Saturday, October 14th and 15th for the King of the Can Weekend at Penn Can Speedway. Penn Can Speedway is located on Route 171 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.

BIG WEEKEND AT PENN CAN FOR FOUR CYLINDER DRIVERS; TWO $400 TO WIN SHOWS WITH ADDITIONAL BONUSES FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14TH AND 15TH

The King of the Can Weekend at Penn Can Speedway will be a big one for Four Cylinder drivers as they will compete in two $400 to win shows with additional bonuses. If a driver can win both nights they will take home at least $1,000 with bonuses. The races will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 14th and 15th.

Both Friday and Saturday night’s races will pay $400 to win. If a driver can win both races they will receive a $200 bonus. The winner on Friday night will get a guaranteed starting spot in the $1,000 to win Four Cylinder race coming up at Five Mile Point. In addition, Friday night’s winner is guaranteed to start no worse than sixth in Saturday night’s STAR Series Championship event.

As they say on TV, “But wait, that’s not all”. All drivers competing both nights will be eligible for a share of a $100 bonus. On Saturday night all drivers that were in competition on both nights will be entered into three drawings. The first name drawn will get a $50 bonus, the second name drawn will get a $30 bonus and the third name drawn will receive a $20 bonus.

The King of the Can Weekend could potentially launch a driver into more than a $2,000 payday. If you can sweep both nights at Penn Can ($400 + $400 + $200 bonus), win the $50 bonus drawing and win the $1,000 to win show at Five Mile, the total would be $2,050. It won’t be easy but it is very possible if a driver can get hot at the right time.

With it being the final point race, The King of the Can Weekend will determine the 2016 STAR Series Champion. Drivers have competed at Penn Can, Five Mile Point and Skyline in a series of races during the summer.

The race, for Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders, will follow track rules. The complete rules can be found on our website at penncan.com.Penn Can Speedway is located on Route 171 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. For further updates be sure to check out our Facebook page.

CRATE SPORTSMAN TO RACE BOTH NIGHTS OF THE KING OF THE CAN WEEKEND; GRIT SERIES ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14TH, STAR SERIES ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15TH AT PENN CAN SPEEDWAY

The 602 Crate Sportsman will have two opportunities to race for $1,000 to win during the October 14th and 15th King of the Can Weekend at Penn Can Speedway. The GRIT Series Sportsman will compete on Friday night and the STAR Series Sportsman will race on Saturday night.

Originally they were going to run a combined race on Friday night but with the points coming down to the wire in both series, the decision was made to run their own unique shows instead. Both 25 lap features will pay $1,000 to win. It’s a great opportunity for Sportsman drivers to get in two great paydays on the weekend.

The King of the Can Weekend begins on Friday, October 14th with the running of the 50 lap STAR Series King of the Can for the Modifieds, paying $3,000 to win. The 602 Sportsman will run their GRIT Series, $1,000 to win race on Friday as well and will be joined by a $400 to win race for the Four Cylinders. The Four Cylinders will also race on Saturday in a STAR Series race paying $400 to win. If a driver can win both nights, they will get a $200 bonus. Race time on Friday is 7:00 p.m.

The King of the Can Weekend will conclude on Saturday, October 15th highlighted by the CRSA Sprint Cars, STAR Series Championship events for the 602 Crate Sportsman, Street Stocks, IMCA Style Modifieds , Factory Stocks and Four Cylinders along with the XCEL 600 Modifieds. Racing takes the green flag at 6:00 p.m.

As the season winds down in the northeast, the races get fewer in numbers but bigger in stature. The King of the Can will be one of the final events in the northeast so be sure to get out and enjoy some great racing while you can.

LONEY AND DOUGHERTY WIN PENN CAN MOD TWIN 20’S;

RUDALAVAGE SECURES FIRST TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP

SUSQUEHANNA, PA…Mike Loney and Mike Dougherty captured Modified Twin 20 wins Friday on Seward Rice Memorial Championship Night at Penn Can Speedway. Alan Rudalavage took home Track Championship honors for the first time on Pine Line Auto Sales Night.
The first 20 lap Modified feature got off to a rocky start with numerous cautions. Once things settled down it was Mike Loney and Mike Colsten putting on a show for the win. Loney took the lead from Ryan Olsommer early and held a slight lead. Colsten stayed within striking distance throughout the race with his son Joey Colsten moving into third with seven laps to go.
Mike Colsten made his move with five laps to go after a great side by side battle with Loney. Colsten raced into the lead and many people thought the race was over. Loney had other ideas as he stayed glued to the bottom and stayed with Colsten. As they took the white flag Colsten brushed the homestretch wall, allowing Loney the run that he needed to pull alongside of him.
Loney forged ahead slightly down the backstretch but Colsten came back at him. As they drag raced to the finish it was Loney claiming his second win of the season in thrilling fashion. Joey Colsten came home third ahead of Brian Malcolm and Nick Rochinski.
The second twin twenty went caution free and was completely dominated by Mike Dougherty. The invert found Dougherty and Dan Pompey on the front row. Dougherty blasted into the lead at the drop of the green and never looked back. He opened up nearly a half a track advantage running the top of the speedway enroute to his first career Penn Can Modified feature win.
Pompey was second ahead of Rochinski, Kevin Hartnett and Rudalavage. Rudalavage’s sixth and fifth place finishes respectively were enough to garner him his first career Penn Can Speedway Track Championship.
The Crate Sportsman ran Twin 15 lap features. Adam MacGeorge would lead at the start of the first 15 lapper but Ryan Stone took over the top spot on lap eight. Stone, who was looking for his first career Sportsman win, had to fend off point leader Mike Schane over the closing laps.
Schane kept the pressure on but Stone was up to the challenge and captured his first Sportsman win. Schane was second ahead of Leo McGurrin, Marty Bunker and Mike Decker. Schane padded his point lead going into the second 15 lap feature.
Just like the Modifieds, the second Sportsman feature went caution free and it was Decker going wire to wire to score his second feature win in the last three races. Bunker came home second ahead of Devon Zona, McGurrin and Stone. Schane’s seventh place finish was enough for him to capture his first Penn Can Track Championship.
The Late Models ran Twin 12 lap features. Ben Whitaker came out late in the season and grabbed his first win of the season in the first feature. He was followed by Bud Phillips, Jim O’Hara and Jamie Bedford. In the second feature it was Phillips taking his tenth win of the season and the 2016 Track Championship. He was followed to the finish by Bedford, Whitaker and O’Hara.
In the Street Stock feature Shane Wolf, Jr. was looking to overtake Ricky Davis, Sr. for the point lead. Wolf did what he needed to do as he captured the feature win. Wolf would need Davis to finish fourth or worse to defend his championship. Davis also did what he had to do as he overcame an early race skirmish to finish second and secure his first Penn Can Track Championship. Ryan Codington, Tom Groover and Jon White rounded out the top five at the finish.
Josh Towner went wire to wire to score the Factory Stock feature win. Jeremy Williams worked his way through the pack to challenge Towner for the lead but Towner was up to the challenge and claimed the victory. Williams finished second and successfully defended his Track Championship honors. They were followed to the line by Kris Shimer, Jason Travis and Jason Rinker.
Jeremy Warren scored his first career Penn Can Four Cylinder feature win after a great battle with Josh Wilder and Frank Kennedy. Wilder ran the bottom and Warren was on the extreme top as they ran side by side for many laps. Kennedy joined in on the fun in the closing laps making it a three car battle for the lead. Kennedy would race past Wilder with two to go but was unable to overtake Warren for the win. Kennedy was second and was crowned as the 2016 Track Champion. Wilder finished third ahead of Sheldon Whitman and Chris Taylor.
